I just realized the other day that it had been quite some time since I've posted anything on the old blog. Then I checked, and it's been since March....so, yeah. I've been putting most of my energy into projects for One Eleven Images, so I've been neglecting my own blog. Well, no more! I'm going to try to make sure I post much more often....and what better reason to get out there and shoot something new! So, hopefully I'll have some new stuff soon. Yesterday, Adam and I took a trip up north, and ended up in Marblehead. I had never been there before, and it is a beautiful little shore town. It was very quiet there, everything covered in a layer of snow and ice, and not many people to be found. We enjoyed ourselves exploring the beaches and jutting rocks, even though I thought I might lose a few fingertips by the end of the day! A nice breeze by the ocean is great in the summer, but in January...it's frigid. It was well worth the trip though, because I'd never been at the beach in the winter, which is something I've always wanted to do. Here are just a few shots of this serene place...more to come soon!

Topsfield Fair

Not quite a seasonal post, but if it would snow instead of just raining here in Boston, I could get some good winter shots! Fingers crossed for some white stuff before Christmas.

Centralia Part III

A few more images from Centralia, PA. These were taken right in the middle of town. They are residential streets that are mostly now just abandoned lots. Notice the stop signs, but no people or cars to be found. The house, or what looks like two row houses still attached, is one of the last left in the town. One of the few things that remains is the Centennial Vault, and I hope someone is there to open it in 2016...

Centralia Part II

More images from Centralia, PA. If you haven't seen the original post, please check below for some more information on this fascinating town. In the post below, you can see a church in the distance...here it is up close. It is a church high up on a hill, with a cemetery behind it, and a boarded up old house next to it. We assume the house used to be the caretaker's. It is now boarded up and grown over with weeds, yet there are still relatively new-looking children's drawings in the windows. Scary!

Centralia, PA

"The ruins of Centralia Pennsylvania no longer exists on some maps. The story began sometime in 1962 along the outskirts of town when trash was burned in the pit of an abandoned strip mine, which connected to a coal vein running near the surface. The burning trash caught the exposed vein of coal on fire. The fire was thought to be extinguished but it apparently wasn't when it erupted in the pit a few days later. Again the fire was doused with water for hours and thought to be out. But it wasn't. The coal then began to burn underground. That was in 1962. For the next two decades, workers battled the fire, flushing the mines with water and fly ash, excavated the burning material and dug trenches, backfilled, drilling again and again in an attempt to find the boundaries of the fire and plan to put the fire out or at least contain it.

All efforts failed to do either as government officials delayed to take any real action to save the village. By the early 1980s the fire had affected approximately 200 acres and homes had to be abandoned as carbon monoxide levels reached life threatening levels. An engineering study concluded in 1983 that the fire could burn for another century or even more and "could conceivably spread over an area of approximately 3,700 acres."

As time passed, each feeble attempt to do anything to stop the fire or help the residents of Centralia would cost more and more due to the fires progression. Over 47 years and 40 million dollars later the fire still burns through old coal mines and veins under the town and the surrounding hillsides on several fronts. The fire, smoke, fumes and toxic gases that came up through the back yards, basements and streets of Centralia literally ripped the town apart. Most of the homes were condemned and residents were relocated over the years with grants from the federal government although some die-hards refused to be bought out and some still remain in the town. Today Centralia is a virtual ghost town with only a few remaining residents. As they continue to live in their beloved homes now owned by the federal government, people pass every day along Route 61, most totally unaware of the history surrounding them and the sad story of Centralia."

Above is the short version of Centralia's long history. A very sad story about a small Pennsylvania town, now deserted except for the few people who refused to leave their homes. We spent two days there, climbing smoking coal piles, exploring a deserted highway, and the empty lots that used to be residential blocks. In the images above you can see the smoke from the underground fire rising from the ground, a lone church on the hill in the distance, and the cracked, crumbling, and smoky remains of what used to be Centralia's highway. Some of the detail is lost in seeing small versions these, so please click on the image to view it larger. I think it goes without saying that this was an extremely interesting and creepy place to photograph. I have much more to come...

Knoebel's Amusement Park

These images were taken at Knoebel's Amusement Park in Elysburg, PA. It is closed down for the season, but it is a free admission park, so there are no gates to keep you from walking through it any time of year. It was a great time of year to go....we had the park to ourselves, except for some maintenance workers. Something about an empty park with closed down rides is always a little creepy. But, at the same time, it also felt comfortable because I used to go there with my family every summer as a child. It was interesting to walk through and realize how much smaller everything is than it seemed then. Here's a peek into my walk down memory lane...

This past week, I spent a perfect fall day walking around the Public Garden and Beacon Hill. It was beautiful out, and everything was practically sparkling. It's a great time of year to be in Boston....its days like this one that make me remember what a beautiful city I live in!

Recently, I've been spending alot of time scanning, photoshopping, organizing, and generally dealing with all the post-production aspects of photography. Basically, lots of time in front of a computer, not so much time behind a camera. So, today, I decided to go out there and remember the whole reason I love to do this anyway :) Pictures taken just for the enjoyment of it. Here are some more portraits from the archives. This is the style I most enjoy shooting children in, just like the ones below at the river. I find the results are much more lively when you just let kids run around and be themselves. I think they have a more personal feel to them, when the kids are at ease, and can let their personalities really show in the photos.

I did some traveling again this past weekend, home to PA for a few events. While there, I spent some time playing in the dirt with my nephew, Eli. He doesn't particularly like getting his picture taken, especially when he'd rather me just play with him instead of pointing a camera in his face. Luckily, I had Adam there to take over some of the playing duties :)

As I mentioned, I shot my niece Caroline's senior portraits this past weekend. While I'm not going to post any of the photos they might choose (until they want me to ;), I decided to put up some outtakes. Here are a few that don't necessarily fit the guidelines of "senior picture", but I think they're pretty anyway. She's a great model, and it's hard to take a bad photograph of her...but these are the ones where she stopped paying attention, or let out a laugh. Sometimes, that's when you get the best stuff. One from the weekend

I took a trip home to Pennsylvania this weekend to shoot my niece's senior pictures, and also to deliver some long awaited prints to a few friends and family members. I had a great time shooting with the new camera, and got to make some people happy with new photos, which is always a great feeling. I only got around to making a few pictures for myself, but this is one of them. Hope you like it!

Well, the day has finally come. I've been shooting with film for a long time, but I've finally gotten myself a digital camera. Adam and I went out last weekend and picked up a Canon 50D, and I have to say...I love it. I am quite enamored with my new toy, and will be using it for a shoot this weekend. But for now, here are a few little tidbits from using it around the house. I love finding pretty little moments like these...

I still won't be abandoning my old friend film any time soon :)
